Burnout Is Sneaky… But Your Eyes Know the Truth..Stress can affect your eye

Imagine this: you’re working late on your laptop, or if you are an eye doctor😉, you end up over working without breaks – by the way, yes that happens in Indian Govt hospitals or you are preparing for NEET PG and studying for 12-13hrs straight. The deadlines won’t stop.
You blink.
Your vision’s a little fuzzy. You rub your eyes. Are they dry… or are you just tired? Then comes that twitch. You laugh it off or sometimes some think twitching of right eyelid is a good omen and left is a bad omen!
But your eyes aren’t laughing or foretelling!
As an ophthalmologist and full-time wellness nerd, I’ve seen a trend that most people miss: your eyes are often the first part of your body to signal that you’re emotionally and physically burnt out.
Today, we’re breaking down how your eyes might be crying for help (sometimes literally), and how to turn that around with practical, eye-friendly self-care.
👁️ The Eyes-Stress Connection (Explained Like You’re 12) – Stress does affect your eye health
Your eyes are directly connected to your brain. Not just metaphorically—literally. Your optic nerves are brain’s extensions. Eyes are like sensors they tell your brain and hence body when to shut down and when to spring back to action.
Stress activates your sympathetic nervous system—your “fight or flight” mode. That leads to:
- Reduced blinking (hello, dry eyes!) – have ever noticed someone shocked or scared when they see a wild animal? – their eyes are wide open
- Inflammation (redness, anyone?)
- Muscle tension (cue twitching)
- Cortisol imbalances that affect your sleep… and dark circles.
- Sometimes, we fuel the stress by viewing screens before bed time – Remember ? Eyes are the “sensors”

🔍 7 Eye Symptoms That Scream “I’m Burnt Out!” (eye conditions due to stress)
Here’s a deep dive into how stress shows up visually—many people have no idea these are signs of emotional and nervous system overload:
1. Chronic Dry Eyes
Stress = less blinking. Less blinking = tears quickly evaporate and dont stay over your eyes. Fewer tears = gritty, sandpaper feeling. Sound familiar?
Fun Fact: People blink 66% less while staring at screens. 20-20-20 RULE remember?
2. Eye Twitching (Myokymia)
That weird, random fluttering of your eyelid? It’s like your facial muscles are waving the white flag. Of late, it is one of the most common complaint that I come across in my practice. It’s involuntary movements of eyelids. From stressed out school kids to working professionals all come with it.
“It’s like your eyes are having a mini anxiety attack of their own.”
3. Blurry Vision
Burnout messes with concentration and accommodation (your eyes’ ability to focus). Especially after hours of screen use, don’t be surprised if your world turns a little soft-edged.
4. Headache
Many young professional come to my OPD saying ” I am having headache, specially at the end of the day.” My sudden next question is – “how much is your screen time.” Then they say with guilty faces 10 hours! You don’t have to be guilty! Because if your work demands that use then not your fault. Now a day! work is stressless for whom?! Screen time + Stress + Sedentary life style = Burn Out Health Upset.
By the way, you are not alone, this can be seen in Ophthalmologists also – when you work at a high volume centre – Sit and see patients, sit and operate, all the while being stressed, and having all these 8 symptoms – happened to me!
5. Photophobia (Light Sensitivity)
Even normal lights might suddenly feel too harsh. Overstimulated nervous systems tend to react more intensely to sensory input.
6. Watery Eyes (Ironically!)
Yes, dry eye can sometimes lead to your eyes tearing up more than usual. It’s the body’s strange attempt at compensation. When you don’t blink – tears evaporate quickly and don’t stay – our eye and brain detects that there is less tears – tries to compensate – more tears – more evaporation – continues..
7. Dark Circles or Puffiness
Lack of sleep = stagnant circulation. Combine that with eye rubbing and cortisol overload, and you’ve got yourself a full raccoon mode.
8. Eye Redness
Inflammation flares under stress. If your whites are redder than usual, it might not just be lack of sleep—it could be stress-induced ocular surface inflammation and dry eye
9. Fluid build up under the retina ( CSCR)
While there are a lot of reasons for this, recently the most common one being Stress. When I diagnose someone with CSCR, the first question I ask is again “Are you burnt- out?” You might not be taking steroid medications or any other preparations, but our body starts producing it by itself when we are stressed – CORTISOL – the stress hormone. This is the causative agent for CSCR.
📖 2 Quick Stories
STORY NO: 1
A patient (let’s call her Anya), who is a working professional and a mom, came in thinking she had an allergy. Her eyes were dry, twitchy, and blurry. But as I asked her – “Are you stressed out in any ways?” she sighed and said,
She – “I am not..I don’t enjoy my work, but I am not stressed.”
me- “What’s your routine like?”
she – “ahh.. i wake up at 4.30 am, then have a quick tea/coffee, prepare breakfast, get the kids ready, prepare breakfast and lunch box, help husband with getting ready, breakfast, I get ready, work work work, then comeback, chill for 10-15 min, prepare dinner, help kids with homework and then clean up and ha by the way I sleep early – 11 pm”
me – I was quiet for a moment. Didn’t comment. In my mind – is your husband a kid? Isn’t he a part of this? Anyways thats a whole lot of different story and then i asked her – ” What do you do for yourself in a day”
she – “that 10-15 min break, i chill by scrolling instagram memes”
me – “I am sorry to say this Anya, you seem to be very much stressed out. your eyes are screeming stress!
I didn’t just prescribe spectacles and eye drops. I helped her by suggesting a hoslistic approach to destress herself. All the patient needs is “to be heard”I truly wish she follows the destress rituals and atleast give sometime for herself in a day!
STORY NO: 2
One evening I am watching F.R.I.E.N.D.S series on Netflix. Suddenly my phone rings and its one of my best friends Rahul. He is a HR. He is excellent in what he does. Very smart and eloquent and knows how to talk with people.
So he called –
Him – “Kshama, my eyes are always red. People in my office would think I am a drunkard. But as you know I am a teetotaller. And yes I know you are the best eye doctor (wow like a typical HR would say 😆) please suggest me something to make it go away”
Me – “Finally you got some time to call! At least for this purpose😂 I know you are overworked, take a break” How do I know he is overworked – Once on a trip all of us were conversing in the car and he was working with his laptop.
Him – “Kshama, Please tell me some drops”
Me – “Work addict or what? Well I can give you drops! but above all you need to focus on taking breaks in between and manage your stress “
Him – “ya ya i have read your blog 20-20-20 and also the shortsightedness one! By the way I will visit you to get my eyes checked (Me wondering when that era will arrive!) ok I will take breaks”
Again I wish he really takes breaks!
How often do we forget to take care of ourselves! sometimes its work, sometimes its others over us, sometimes its chores, anything. It seems like we keep finding one thing or the other to just distract away from ourselves!
I am not bragging, cuz I was the same a few years back! and neglecting us doesn’t help.
🧘♀️ 7 Ways to Help Your Eyes (and You) Recover from Burnout
This isn’t just about vision—it’s about your vitality. Here’s your recovery toolkit:
✅ 1. The 20-20-20 Rule
Every 20 minutes, take a 20 second break and look at something 20 feet away Simple. Science-backed. You can use a lubricant eye drop in the break
✅ 2. Refraction and correction:
Get checked if you have any refractive error (specs). Working without correction strains your eye. You need to wear the correction and look at screens. Period!
✅ 3. Warm Compresses
Dip a clean kerchief or cotton in warm water, and gently ( I mean very gently, don’t rub your eye) massage. Relieves dry eye. Soothes the eyes and calms the nervous system. Double win.
✅ 4. Mindful Blinking Exercise
Use a pomodoro app. Take breaks. Taking breaks from screen itself will remind your eyes to blink!
✅ 5. Reduce Blue Light Exposure
Use blue light filters while gazing at screen, specially after sunset. Your retina (and melatonin levels) will thank you.
✅ 6. Visual Meditation
Gaze at a candle flame. Watch a plant. Follow clouds. Your mind follows your vision—choose peace.
✅ 7. Prioritize Sleep Like It’s a Treatment Plan
Sleep is free retinal therapy. Don’t neglect it. Treat your sleeping schedule religiously. Avoid screens at least 1/2 an hour before sleep. Sleep kicks out stress!
